About 85,000 New Zealanders made the move across the Tasman in the year to June 2025. If you're weighing up the switch, you've probably noticed that Australian job ads routinely list salaries that are 25โ€“35% higher than comparable NZ roles. Before you hand in your notice, here's a clear-eyed look at what that salary difference actually buys you.

The headline comparison

A software engineer earning $110,000 NZD in Auckland might find the same role advertised at $130,000โ€“$145,000 AUD in Sydney or Melbourne. At the current exchange rate (1 NZD โ‰ˆ 0.92 AUD), $110,000 NZD is about $101,200 AUD โ€” so the Australian role is genuinely 28โ€“43% more in Australian dollars, or 18โ€“30% more in NZD terms.

That's real money. But the full picture is more nuanced.

Tax differences

New Zealand and Australia have similar marginal tax structures, but the thresholds differ. On $130,000 AUD:

  • Australia: Take-home โ‰ˆ $93,500 AUD after income tax and Medicare levy (2% Medicare, 1.5% if you have private health cover)
  • New Zealand equivalent ($141,300 NZD): Take-home โ‰ˆ $100,800 NZD โ€” but this is a misleading comparison because it's 38% more than you were earning before

The effective tax rates are similar (Australia slightly lower on this band), so tax isn't a meaningful differentiator. The salary itself is the driver.

Superannuation โ€” it's not all yours

Australia's Superannuation Guarantee requires employers to contribute 11.5% of your salary to your super fund (rising to 12% in July 2026). This is often listed "on top of" salary in job ads, meaning a "$130,000 package" might be $116,000 salary + $14,000 super.

Super is locked away until preservation age (60โ€“65). For the purposes of your monthly take-home, you should use the base salary number, not the package. KiwiSaver works similarly but is typically 3% from employer and 3% from employee โ€” a smaller compulsory contribution than Australian super.

Cost of living: it's complicated

Sydney and Melbourne are expensive. Here's a quick comparison on major costs in 2026:

  • 2BR apartment rent: Sydney $3,800โ€“$5,200/mo AUD vs Auckland $2,800โ€“$3,800/mo NZD (โ‰ˆ$2,580โ€“$3,500 AUD). Sydney is roughly 30โ€“50% more expensive to rent.
  • Groceries: Comparable overall, but Australia has more competition (Aldi, Costco presence) bringing staples down
  • Transport: Both cities have expensive public transport. Opal card (Sydney) and Myki (Melbourne) compare to Auckland's AT HOP
  • Healthcare: Australia's Medicare gives you free GP visits. NZ's ACC is broader for accidents but doesn't cover GP costs the same way
  • Childcare: Australia's childcare subsidy (CCS) can cover 90%+ of fees for lower incomes. NZ's 20 hours ECE helps but leaves families paying more out of pocket for full-time care

Which cities pay the most?

Not all of Australia is Sydney. If you're open to location:

  • Perth: Strong demand in mining, engineering and healthcare. Salaries comparable to Sydney with lower rents. Good quality of life.
  • Brisbane: Growing tech and infrastructure sector post-Olympics investment. Lower COL than Sydney or Melbourne.
  • Melbourne: Strong for finance, education and healthcare. Similar cost to Sydney.
  • Darwin: High salaries in healthcare and government, with tropical climate and lower housing costs.

Jobs in demand in 2026

New Zealanders on a Special Category Visa (subclass 444) can work in Australia indefinitely without a work permit. In-demand roles include: registered nurses, civil and structural engineers, software developers, electricians, teachers and aged care workers โ€” many with sign-on bonuses.

The real verdict

If you're in tech, engineering, healthcare or finance, moving to Australia for 2โ€“5 years is financially rational. A $30,000โ€“$40,000 AUD salary increase, invested into super and personal savings, can set you up significantly better by the time you return โ€” if you return. If you're in hospitality, retail or early-career roles, the numbers are less compelling once you factor in the higher cost of living in major cities.
